Sep 10th, 2018

When was the last time you checked up on a relative, friend and colleague that you know have some mental issues? Many people having mental health problems without getting necessary help have passed on, through suicide. Suicide is one of the leading causes of death in both male and female today.

Today, 10th of September marks the World Suicide Prevention Day. It is a special day dedicated to remind the world that it is possible to prevent suicide. Also to let people know that more attention should be given to people struggling with their mental state.

It is rare for a suicidal person to ask for help. Very rare! But honestly, they really need our help. There are a lot of ways to help prevent that suicidal attempt and save a precious life. This starts by recognizing some of the signs they show and taking them seriously. Many suicidal persons usually show some warning signs; jokingly or seriously. Whether the signs sound as joke or not, try to take them seriously.

Some of these signs include writing about hurting/harming themselves, always talking about death, going to places where they can easily claim their lives, playing around harmful substances, saying goodbye more often, always isolating from other people etc.

The best way to offer help to suicidal person is to give him/her attention. When they are talking to you, given them a listening ear. It can be very difficult to help a suicidal person, especially a loved one. You may not find it easy to control your emotions but you can always talk to someone (a doctor or a psychologist) to help.

If you notice anyone having suicidal feelings, you can get help for them here in Nigeria. Contact any of these organizations.
