“A little dust does not make an ocean dirty. By blaming you change the society by making a lot of dust. By taking systematic actions and by focusing on beauty. For sure we can change our society and clean up the dust.” -Debasis Mridha
Due to the high level of pollution in the world, one of the biggest retail shops in Africa, Shoprite Group, in partnership with a recycling company in Nigeria, Wecyclers, has set out plans to clean up 9 countries in Africa.
The aim of the project is to remove waste from communities in Africa. Over 6,000 people are to take part in the project from July 14th to 18th in almost 500 events.
Ms. Omobolanle Olowu, Head, Business Development of Wecyclers explained the need for the clean-up:
“The hope is to launch a movement of active citizens who act for change by cleaning and keeping clean public areas. Plastic waste is putting the environment under considerable pressure with the equivalent of a garbage truck of plastic dumped into our oceans every minute.”
“Recycling is central to this initiative, hence Wecyclers’ decision to partner with Shoprite Nigeria on some of the 45 clean-ups planned in the country. Those organising clean-ups are encouraged to partner with local recyclers to ensure that most of what is collected gets recycled.”
To join the community, Shoprite Group has introduced a mobile community. Volunteer can join the community through a website. The website created for the mobile community will allow the users create their clean up in their various areas.
