On Sunday, 13th of May the Gidirons team was crowned the champion of the Shitsuke Flag Football league. They played a big match and went home with the trophy. The big game had all teams come together, ready to deploy the entire playbook. The intensity of the game had cooked up tension but the music, food and commentaries relieved the tension. The game kicked off at about 2:00pm.
The field saw stellar performances like never before as the Swordsmen team were playing real well to get the trophy, after experiencing a game like this the week before, where the team was shut out 43 – 0.
On the other hand, the Trogons sought to continue their winning streak especially in a game that mattered as much as this. Who wouldn’t want to be etched in history as the first Champions of flag football in the history of Nigeria?
At first, the game did not go so well for both teams at the end of the first quarter as there were no touchdowns. In the second quarter, the Trogons Team had the first touchdown in the game. This did not set the Swordsmen team back. They remained focus on their goal of winning the match.
THE RETURN OF THE LIGHTNING MONKEY
The team knew the game would be different after Babse popularly known as the Lightning Monkey returned to the team. The team earned their first two touch downs from Babse who compensated the team for the 2 games he missed in the league. As the game began to get tougher, the team grew stronger.
Sina, our star quarterback deserves some accolades for distributing plays among the swordsmen. He made sure that everyone on the team got a chance to record stellar stats on the general game polls.
Trogons player, Donna and Nneka did not stop at doing their best. But our Swordsmen ladies were up to the task. They were playing flag trap, deflecting balls and pulling goal line stops. Mamba, probowler and Defender of the Gidirons brought real nice tackles to the game and we really commend her.
Farouq, popularly known as Beast Mode of the Trogons Team came with his speed but the Gidirons covered the zone and played well against the Trojons. The star female receiver Duo for the Swordsmen recorded touchdowns for the team, shooting up the figures on the score board. Giving a smooth closure to the game was our man, Henry, who while being away for a while, recorded a remarkable touchdown which was also his first in the league. What better way to close out the season than this? The Game ended with a score of 23:48. We couldn’t be more proud to be the winners of the first championship game of the Shitsuke Flag Football League.
We are not only the Champions but a Gidiron, took home the MVP; our home girl Ama. It is no news that Ama was a beast on that field, hence the MVP recognition. Our efforts revealed star players on every level and the league better watch out for there is more to come in the next season as we intend to repeat.
Sunday was sure one of the best days in the lives of the players. In addition to the championship trophies, Babse and Nike, Co-owners of Gidiron were also recognized for their contributions to the development of the league.
