The Nigeria Airways which was once the pride of the country would begin operations again in December. This was announced recently by Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN.

Nigeria Airways was a Nigerian airline founded after the termination of West African Airways Corporation in 1958. Until 1961, Nigerian government owned majority of airlines, about 51%.  The airline had been the country’s national pride until it ceased operations in 2003.

Since the collapse of Nigeria Airways in 2003, it has left a big void in the aviation sector of the country’s economy. This has given foreign airlines opportunities to explore the investment potential in the country.
The absence of national carrier in the country has affected various sectors of the economy most especially tourism.

Although the requirements of setting up a national airline is quite massive but the efforts the government is making towards reviving it is very encouraging and it calls for support from all stakeholders.

BENEFIT OF NATIONAL CARRIER IN TOURISM SECTOR 

There will be colossal economic benefits for Nigeria if our ‘pride’ is finally revived. The tourism sector will be the greatest beneficiary of Nigeria Airways when it finally starts operations in December. This will boost the number of tourists coming in to the country annually as there will be direct flights to Nigeria readily available to them. This will not only boost the tourism sector but also generate revenue for the country.
