Parents of some Nigerian students have claimed that Police officers in Benin Republic have unlawfully arrested and detained 50 students.

The parents claimed that Beninoise police arrested the students and kept them in barbaric conditions without telling them their offences. According to the parents, 50 students have been jailed already without the notice of their family members.

Through the Senior Special Assistant to Nigeria President on Diaspora affairs, Hon. Abike Dabiri– Erewa, the parents of the students arrested have seeked the intervention President Mohammadu Buhari on the issue.

Mr Femi Akinwande who represented the other parents said the Béninoise police were picking any Nigerian student they see. They check through their phones for I nternet related items and arrest them afterwards.

Mr Akinwande said the arrest had been going on for a while after the government ban all sorts of criminality.

“As a result of this, the Police swung into action arresting both culprits and non-offenders as long as they are Nigerians”

Speaking to Me Akinwande, a Beniniose Police, confirmed that 50 Nigerian students have been arrested and put in custody. While 50 of the students have been jailed, some will appear in court today, 10th July.

The officers made it clear that they acted hastily to the law because they believe Nigerians are more knowledgable and literate than them computer-wise.

On behalf of other parents, Mr Akinwande has urged Mrs Dabiri-Erewa, to intervene so their children will be released and let to continue with their various studies.
