One way to spot a Nigerian abroad or a Nigerian at the airport is the food items you find in their luggage. We want to believe other Africans do the same but Nigerians take it to a whole new level.
The typical Nigerian is not very adventurous with food and they are likely to take their food everywhere they go. We do not experiment with food and at a restaurant we are either ordering Jollof or something that looks like Jollof. We will not be caught dead eating raw fish (sushi) or Pepperless food. God forbid!
Whenever we are leaving familiar territory to the unfamiliar, we take our food with us! We go from basic items such as Indomie noddles and plantain chips to the downright embarrassing such as tuber of Yam and live snails!
We did a poll on the most embarrassing food items people have carried in their luggage and some of the responses will shock you, or will it?
Tuber of yam
We understand, buying yams abroad can be pretty expensive compared to the price you pay for it back home. But come on guys, a tuber of yam with all your expensive clothes and shoes? Yes we know it’s going to be wrapped in paper but there are yams available abroad 😂. No judge zone here though.
Fried beef
No one does fried meat better than your Nigerian Mum or the Alase’s (local cooks) at parties. We totally understand why you need to take fried meats with you abroad! Well spiced, seasoned to the insides with the perfect texture! Fried meat also comes in handy when you make a nice pot of stew to remind you of home.
Iru (Locust beans)
We still do not understand how people take this with the awful stench! They are usually wrapped in layers and layers of polytene or Air tight containers. No one wants all their clothes masked in Iru fragrance.
Ogbono (irvingia)
Ogbono, lovers do not play with Ogbono. That “drawy” texture of this delicious soup is one Nigerians can not resist. We really don’t blame anyone for taking this delicious delicacy with them everywhere they go.
Stock fish
Yup! Nigerians especially the ones from the Eastern part of Nigeria are huge fans of Stock fish. Let’s blow your mind a little, did you know stock fish isn’t Nigerian, it is imported from Norway?
Roasted Corn
We’ve actually never seen this happen before but someone from our twitter said she has taken roasted corn in her luggage 😩. Just wow!

Frozen frejon
Sounds crazy but a friend once took frozen frejon from Lagos to London. Don’t ask how or why but she did. Frejon is a Brazilian dish Nigerians (especially Lagosians) eat during Easter holiday.
Live snails
Haha we remember this story made the headlines “giant African land snails illegally imported from Nigeria”. It was so hilarious. But common Nigerians, taking live snails is a bit of an overkill!
Others
Dried vegetables
Bowl of stew (preferably frozen)
