After 20 years of being enemies, Ethiopia and Eritrea finally signed agreement and declared the end of war between them. They signed the  agreement on Monday 11th of July at the state capital of Eritrea, Asmara.

At the signing, Prime Minister for Ethiopia, Abiy Ahmed said

“The march toward peace might have been a long time coming but we have faith in the love and solidarity of our people. We can now imagine a future where we see no national boundaries or high walls dividing us. The people of our region are joined in common purpose.”

According to a tweet by Eritrea’s Minister for Information, the agreement between the two countries will promote cooperation.

Ethiopian PM Abiy arrived Eritrea on Sunday prior to the day of signing the agreement. President Isaias Afwerk of Eritrea received PM Abiy at the airport where they shared a hug.

Speaking at a dinner hosted by President Isaias on Sunday, Prime Minister Abiy mentioned that all broken ties between the two nations will be re-established.

“We have agreed to open up embassies in our respective countries, allow our people to visit each other’s cities, and allow our airlines and ports to operate freely. We will demolish the wall and, with love, build a bridge between the two counties”

Prime Minister Abiy who assumed office in April pleaded with the government of Ethiopia to resolve the 2 decade misunderstanding between the nation and Eritrea.

Abiy’s significant trip to Eritrea finally came after announcing his intention to sign agreement known as Algiers Agreement which his country had rejected with Eritrean government.
