Dealing With Language Barrier When Traveling to a New Destination
Oct 11th, 2018

A lot of time, many travelers worry about how to get around in an entirely new destination, how to ask locals for directions, how to negotiate prices, how to greet etc just because of language differences. In every part of the world, communication is one of the most important things to get people from different backgrounds to relate freely with each other. Without the understanding of each others language, it is mostly difficult to express ourselves.

As tourists, we usually love to be able to speak and express ourselves in the language spoken at our new destination. But due to this challenge (language barrier), we worry about how to relate with the locals. However, to avoid being confused and lost in a new destination, it is important to learn and understand at least some basic phrases in the local language of your destination. Learning and understanding the local will definitely make your travel experience even more enjoyable.

To have a wonderful travel experience without letting language differences come your way, here are some tips that will help you.

GET A TOUR GUIDE THAT UNDERSTANDS YOUR LANGUAGE

It is important to get a tour guide that speaks the language you understand. With a tour guide that understands your language and can translate to his/her local language, you will be able to express yourself, get along and also relate well with the locals.

USE TRANSLATING APPS

Over the years, technology has improved so well and it has been helping tourists have a wonderful travel experience. With the introduction of apps that help translate a language to another, tourists can go anywhere in the world with the assurance of getting help from these translating mobile apps.

LEARN ON YOUR OWN

Months or weeks before embarking on your trip, try to learn some basic phrases on your own. Go online to search for classes that teach the language you need to know.

GET A LOCAL TO TRANSLATE SOME BASIC PHRASES

Before leaving for your trip, ensure you get in touch with locals (who understand your language) to help translate some basic things to know that will help you at least get along well with the locals when you arrive the country.

If you have ever been on any of our trips, you’ll know we love to share some English phrases translated to the language spoken in our destination. This has really been helping us and through that, we have been able to learn some foreign words.
