It was a bad day in Cuba on Friday, 18th May when an airplane came down shortly after taking off at Havana. The crash is the worst aviation disaster to happen in Cuba in about 30 years.
Adel Yzquierdo, Cuban Transport Minister evaluated the death toll to 110 passengers. 3 women survived the crash, though clinging to life. The survivors were identified as Mailen Diaz, 19; Grettel Landrove, 23; and Emiley Sanchez, 39 from Holguin, Havana and Holguin respectively.
Director of the Calixto Garcia Hospital, Carlos Alberto Martinez admitted that the 3 survivors were in extremely critical condition.
“We must be conscious that they present severe injuries. They are in a critical state.”
The Cabana Airways Boeing 737 came down shortly after taking off from Jose Marti International Airport. The airplane was on a domestic flight from Havana to Holguin.
President Miguel Diaz-Canel of Cuba however, described the accident as unfortunate
“There has been an unfortunate aviation accident. The news is not very promising, it seems that there is a high number of victims,”
In addition, President Miguel said the bodies were identified.
As a result of the crash, Cuba has declared a 2 day national mourning across the country to honour the people that died in the accident.
