Indonesia: 14 People Killed in Powerful Earthquake on Tourist Island

In the early hours of yesterday, a powerful earthquake struck Lombok Island, a popular tourist destination in Indonesia which attracts many tourists. Over 100 people got injured and 14 people killed in the disaster.

The earthquake disaster destroyed many homes in Lombok village and one of the witnesses described it as a strong one.

“The earthquake was very strong… and everybody in my house panicked, we all ran outside,”

“All my neighbours also ran outside and the electricity was suddenly cut off.”

The earthquake also affected the mountain and resulted in the death of a Malaysian tourist hiking to Mount Rinjani. Over 800 people were climbing the mountain. However, the rescue team went out to rescue the other climbers.

Earthquake is a common natural disaster in Indonesia because of where it is located. The country lies on the Ring of Fire, an area in the basin of the Pacific Ocean. Frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions are common occurrence in the area.
