Google for Nigeria: Google to Provide Free Wifi Service in Nigeria

Google for Nigeria 2018 kicked off today at the Landmark Event Center, Lagos. As revealed at the event, Google Nigeria has planned to launch free WiFi service in some cities across Nigeria.

The Vice President of Nigeria, Yemi Osinbajo, was present at the event center today. He said the country will partner with Google in providing and improving WiFi connectivity in the country.

“We will be partnering with Google and other technology providers to achieve the level of connectivity that will match the creativity of our people.”

According to the Google Nigeria country director, Google Station is an initiative aimed at addressing the problem of accessing data.

“One of the challenges we found was access to data. Broadband penetration is low and are not reliable and there are challenges with affordability just allow many Nigerians benefit from the digital economy. We are very excited to be able to launch in collaboration with partners,”

GOOGLE STATION LOCATIONS IN NIGERIA 

Between now and end of 2019, the WiFi facility will open at 5 cities in the country. The other 5 states are Ibadan, Port Harcourt, Enugu, Kaduna and Abuja. Over 10 million Nigerians will enjoy the connection at over 200 sites in Lagos and the other states. The program of making free WiFi connection available started by partnering with 21st century.

“Google Station will be rolling out in 200 locations in five cities across Nigeria by the end of 2019, bringing Wi-Fi to millions of people. Sites include markets, transport hubs, shopping malls, universities, and more. Nigeria is the fifth country to get Google Station, after India, Indonesia, Thailand and Mexico.”

Presently, Google Station is available at 5 locations in Lagos city. They include; Landmark event center, Computer village, local airport, Ikeja City mall and The Palms, Lekki. However, the company has planned to expand to other locations in the state.

OUR SUGGESTION 

The idea of providing free internet to millions of Nigerians is a good initiative. We believe this will boost development in the country.
