Eco-travel: How to Be an Ecotourist
Sep 3rd, 2018

To become an ecotourist, there are a lot of things to put into consideration plus you will be constantly reminded of the awareness it requires. Yes, it’s  overwhelming right? Of course, it may seem so difficult to do initially, but after making 2-3 eco friendly trips, you begin to love it and it will even seem fun to do in the long run.

Making some easy to do choices will really change the way you travel and even have some great impact on the environment you visit. To become an eco traveler/ eco tourist, here are some of the few choices you should make and try to stick to.

MAKE USE OF LOCAL TRANSPORTATION

As a tourist, you will definitely make use of transportation anywhere you visit. But to be an eco tourist, you should try as much as possible to opt for public transportation whenever you have the chance to. It is okay to fly if you are going to a very far distance (If the destination is accessible through rail or road, you can still opt for that rather than fly) but when going within a short distance, ferries, public buses, motorbikes, tricycles will do just fine. Through this, you get to meet and mix with locals and learn more from them.

DO NOT USE PLASTIC BAGS

Opt for paper or cloth bags for packing your things rather than plastic bags.

DISPOSE YOUR GARBAGE PROPERLY

One of the best and easiest ways to keep our environment clean and green; whether we travel or not, is proper disposal of our wastes. As a tourist, you should do you own part in making your destination greener. Ask the indigenes of the best way to dispose your refuse. That way, you’re contributing greatly towards achieving a greener environment.

MAKE USE OF REFILLABLE WATER BOTTLES/FLASKS

The use of plastic is one of the major causes of pollution almost everywhere around the world. Some measures have been put in place replace the use in many countries. As an ecotourists, instead of buying bottled water everytime you feel like taking water, simple make use of a flask. You can refill it each time it’s down. This way, you are contributing to the reduction of pollution caused by plastics.

SOAK IN THE SCENERY OF YOUR ENVIRONMENT

Walking around is one the best ways to interact with your environment. You do not only interact and get familiar to the area and the culture, but you also keep off weight you have gained on your travel, lol! Cycling too works fine.
