Alternative Lagos: GP Surfing Gives Three Tips for First Time Surfers.
Mar 14th, 2018

An image of someone holding a surf board is not one that comes to mind when you think of Lagos. Every time we see a photo of someone holding a surf board in Lagos, we chuckle on the inside. A good chuckle because we know that if Lagos does things right, it has huge potential of being a top contender for leisure/adventure tourism in Africa. Takwa Bay, Lagos is now a gem for those interested in either surfing or just watching surfers. We have GP surfing school to thank for that!

SURFING IN LAGOS

Surfing in Lagos is fast becoming a thing. We already had our first surfing competition which we hear was a huge success. Two years ago was the first time we heard of surfing in Lagos via this BBC interview. We are so proud of how much dedication and zeal God’s Power has put into this venture. One to be emulated. He’s doing what he loves and creating jobs while at it. Surf classes at Takwa Bay costs N7,000 per session and he’s often assisted by other locals in the area. He takes on some of the locals and trains them and this helps keep them off the “street”.  Now they can teach people how to surf and earn a living from it.

Lagos is far from surfers paradise and is probably not rated top 50 surf spots in the world but we’ve attracted two international surfers; Luke Davis and William Aliotti. How about that? Their film has been published and has also helped bring awareness to the area.

TIPS FOR FIRST TIME SURFERS

In this short video, GP Surfing gives us three tips for first time surfers which will come in hand:

Q: Do you need to be a professional swimmer to surf?

A: You must know how to swim to surf. This skill is essential especially when you get smashed by a wave. A good swimmer will not be afraid of the waves.

Q: Best time to surf?

A: High tide! When the tide is low, its too shallow to surf. You might break the fins of your surf board

Q: Tips for first time surfers

A:  As a first timer, you might be afraid of falling off the board and that’s okay.  I advise you keep trying again. You’ll get better with time.

For people who can swim will you be willing to give surfing a try? For people who CANNOT swim, watching surfers trying to balance on their boards, falling off or catching and missing waves is more exciting than you think! You should definitely give it a shot.
